With the support of WantedDesign, Strate allowed Romain DELEGUE and Mitja BEHNKE, two 5th year Product Design students, to participate in this workshop dedicated to Design in times of crisis.
Here is their testimony.
"From September 27 to October 1, 2018, Strate gave us the opportunity to participate to the Design Under Pressure Workshop in Mexico City. Indeed, Mexico City was elected World Design Capital 2018® by the World Design Organization. Following the earthquake of 2017, CENTRO offered to work on the theme of Design in the event of a crisis. The event took place in two stages: visits to initiatives set up in the capital, followed by a creative 24-hour workshop.
To start the journey, we had a presentation of the week's main lines, visits and projects. The visits focused on social and solidarity initiatives and projects in response to the events of 2017. The 4th day was devoted to the 24-hour workshop.
Romain joined the Shelter team and Mitja the Health team. Supervised by James Meraz, teacher at ArtCenter, the Shelter working group evolved under a very creative and artistic methodology. The Health team was supervised by Cecilia Léon de la Barra, a Mexican Designer and teacher at CENTRO.
This 24-hour workshop was an exciting experience because it was not only about finding emergency solutions to a natural disaster but also about questioning the role of the designer in times of crisis. This allowed us to realize that design is capable of responding effectively, even in the immediate future, i.e. without the luxury of a long-term analytical approach.“
